Black oxide coating could be the best way to obtain an appealing black finish.and superior corrosion resistance. You donot to need to worry about paint chipping, peeling, or flaking off the finish. All of this makes a black oxide coating an economical way to give your metal parts an attractive appearance.
Black oxide is a conversion coating on the surface of the metal. The metal parts are dipped in a heated alkaline solution at approximately 80-90 degrees F and the black oxide coating is formed by a chemical reaction between the iron of the ferrous alloy and the hot oxide bath. It produces a magnetite (Fe3 O4) on the surface of the metal part.
Black Oxide coating is a five-step process of cleaning, rinsing, black oxide, rinsing, and a final after-finishing coating must be applied. The after-finish coating must be applied as black oxide without the after-finish coating has very poor corrosion resistance and surface rust will form quickly on the carbon steel metal part. The after-finish can be an oil (dry to touch), wax or lacquer. Peregrine uses an oil solution which is dried to touch.
Black oxide cannot be applied on top of plated parts. The plating must be removed prior to the black oxide process by means of an acid pickling bath.
Black oxide is generally used for aesthetic appeal. Metal components such as hand tools, bolts, nuts and automotive fasteners &parts are common items that get black oxide treatment.
Black oxide coating offers a range of benefits, such as:
