Zinc Nickel Plating

Zinc Nickel Plating – Fast Turnarounds and Excellent Services

Carbon steel, unlike alloy based stainless steel, contains a carbon content from about 0.05% up to 2.1% by weight. As the carbon percentage content rises, the steel can become harder and stronger through heat treating; however, it becomes less ductile. Regardless of the heat treatment, a higher carbon content reduces weldability. Unfortunately, it is vulnerable to corrosion which may result in iron oxide or rust.

So, what is the right solution? The answer is plating on the surface of the carbon steel. This is the best way to protect the carbon steel without entirely changing its core structure.

How does Plating Work on Carbon Steel?

Plating is a surface covering in which a metal is deposited on a conductive surface. Plating has been done for hundreds of years; it is also critical for modern technology. Plating is used to decorate objects, for corrosion inhibition, to harden, to improve wearability, to reduce friction, and for other purposes.

What is the best Type of Plating used for Carbon Steel?

Zinc nickel plating is one of the best corrosion resistant finishes available offering over 5 times the protection of conventional zinc plating and up to 1,000 hours of neutral salt spray test performance. This plating is a combination of a high zincnickel alloy (10–15% nickel) and some variation of chromate. The most common mixed chromates include hexavalent iridescent, trivalent or black trivalent chromate. Peregrine only uses purple/blue trivalent chromate as safe option. Peregrine does NOT use Hexavalent chromate as it has been classified as a human carcinogen by OSHA.
