Stainless steel has anti-corrosive properties, and this makes it an ideal component for a range of applications. But the metal surface may end up developing a layer of corrosion or rust due to iron molecules present on the material’s surface.
Passivation is an effective method to remove free iron molecules, helping to preserve a smooth, rust-free surface. Peregrine Metal Finishing has the expertise and equipment to provide this service to our customers.
Passivation is a widely popular metal finishing process that aims to prevent corrosion. When it comes to passivating the stainless steel, nitric acid or citric acid is used to remove free iron from the material’s surface. This chemical treatment allows the underlying chromium to react with the air to form a protective oxide coating on the surface of the part.
Passivation is a post-fabrication process for stainless steel parts and components. Advantages may include:
While stainless steel is quite resistant to corrosion and rust, it is not completely immune to iron particles produced from equipment and tools that leave microscopic residue behind. The material first undergoes cleaning with an alkaline-based solution which removes contamination. Then, the part is rinsed with DI water and placed in the acid bath that dissolves the iron. Once the part is dried, the materials’ resistance is tested with copper sulfate.
We carry a proven track record in showing dedication and efficiency in a spectrum of industries like automotive, steel, marine and offshore, oil and gasand much more. You can rely on our stainless steel passivation services as we accommodate fast turnaround times and on-time delivery performance.
